When learning to answer What questions Intraverbals, your child doesn’t have cues, such as images, to help him. That’s why it is important that he already understands why questions and knows how to answer them.

 

2. Why learn What questions’ Intraverbals?

 

Learning to answer and ask What questions is a great way to develop language and conversation skills for children with Autism or speech delay. “What” questions are an important part of any speech or ABA therapy.

 

3. How to teach your child to answer what questions?

 

What questions, are one of the easiest WH Questions to learn for children in preschool, ABA Therapy or Speech Therapy.

In order to teach your child to answer what questions intraverbals

  • start with printing and laminating the task cards’ pdf file below.
  • Place the task cards in front of your child and ask the questions on them.
  • Record your child’s answer on the tracking sheets below

 

What questions are often about objects or actions. Here we separate the two so that the child is not confused while still learning to answer ‘what questions.

 

a. Learn to answer “what” questions about objects (H23 ABLLS-R aligned activity)

 

Here, the child learns to answer “What” questions about objects or things. For example “What do you see in the park?”

 

List of ‘What’ Questions about objects with possible answers

  1. What do you find in the bedroom? (bed, nightstand, pillow, carpet, lamp)
  2. What do you find in the bathroom? (bathtub, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, toilet paper)
  3. What do you find in the kitchen? (stove, microwave, mop, fork, spatula, oven, plate)
  4. What do you find at the office? (laptop, pen, printer, eraser, ruler)
  5. What do you find in the living room? (sofa, table, tv, carpet)
  6. What do you see at the park? (swing, slide, sandbox, trees)
  7. What do you see at the gym? (bike, treadmill, weight lifting equipment)
  8. What do you find at the supermarket? (flour, yogurt, water, fruits, meat)
  9. What do you see at the shoe store? (sneakers, boots, flip-flops)
  10. What do you see at the clothing store? (pants, skirts, dresses, shirts)
  11. What do you see at the cinema? (seats, popcorn, screen)
  12. What do you see at the fire station? (fire truck, helmet, gloves, hose)
  13. What do you find at the bank? (money, ATM, desk)
  14. What do you see at the doctor’s office? (stethoscope, face mask, thermometer, weight scale)
  15. What do you see in the garage? (car, flashlight, ladder)
  16. What do you find at the restaurant? (tables, chairs, fork)
  17. What do you see at the library? (books, shelves, chairs)
  18. What do you see at the stadium? (seats, lights, stairs)
  19. What do you see at the beach? (umbrella, sand castle, sunglasses, surfboard)
  20. What do you find at the airport? (airplane, suitcase, bag, bus)
  21. What do you find at the zoo? (cage, light, trees)
  22. What do you see at the parking lot? (car, truck, motorcycle)
  23. What do you see at the hospital? (bed, wheelchair, stethoscope)
  24. What do you see at the amusement park? (Ferris wheel, rollercoaster, bumper car)
  25. What do you see at the mosque? (prayer clothes, carpet, shoes, books)

 

 

b. Learn to answer “what” questions about activities (H24 ABLLS-R aligned activity)

 

Here, the child learns to answer “What” questions about activities or actions such as “What do you do in the restaurant?”

  1. What do you do in the bedroom? (sleep, rest, play)
  2. What do you do in the bathroom? (shower, wash, pee)
  3. What do you do in the kitchen? (eat)
  4. What do you do in school? (learn)
  5. What do you do in the living room? (watch Tv)
  6. What do you do at the park? (play, run, swing, slide)
  7. What do you do at the train station? (travel)
  8. What do you do at the supermarket? (buy groceries)
  9. What do you do at the gas station? (buy fuel for the car)
  10. What do you do at the clothing store? (buy clothes)
  11. What do you do at the hairdresser? (cut hair, blow dry hair)
  12. What do you do at the bakery? (buy bread)
  13. What do you do at the bank? (get money)
  14. What do you do at the doctor’s office? (get treatment)
  15. What do you do at the theater? (watch a play)
