Why learn Which questions?
‘Which’ questions are some of the most powerful WH questions. Without them, children are unable to express choice and preference for something over the other.
Children with special needs are particularly vulnerable to understanding and voicing, verbally or not, their choice or preference. Being able to understand and answer ‘which’ questions opens a world of possibilities and opportunities for children with autism and other disabilities.
To answer ‘which’ questions, does the child have to use a verbal expression of choice? Definitely not! parents, educators, caregivers, and speech specialists are usually looking for a clear expression of choice.
Examples of Which questions for ABA and speech therapy?
1.’Which’ questions related to the Name of the object or person
Here the child is offered a flashcard with two pictures and a question on the top asking the child to identify the object with a specific name.
This kind of ‘which’ question is the easiest because the child should only know the name of the objects on the flashcard.
Here are some examples:
- Which one is a cat?
- Which one is a plush?
2.’Which’ questions related to an Adjective
In this kind of which question there are also two pictures of two different objects and a question on which one can be described with a specific adjective like:
- Which one is red, an apple or a potato?
- Which one is small, a tree or a flower?
3. ‘Which’ questions related to a Feature
Flashcards with feature Which questions ask the child to identify if the object on the image has a specific feature, like for example:
- Which one has leaves, sneakers or grapes?
- Which one has fur, a lion or a ring?
4. ‘Which’ questions related to a Category
In this type of Which question, the child is asked which one of the objects on the flashcard belongs to a specific category.
To give you an idea of the type of questions to ask:
- Which one is a piece of furniture, a tablet or a table?
- Which one is an item of clothing, a suit or a burger?
5. ‘Which’ questions related to Functions
In this kind of ‘which’ question about function, the child is asked to find the object on the flashcard that has a specific function. Here are some examples:
- Which one is used to sing, a slide or a microphone?
- Which one is used to fly, a helicopter or a fish?
6. ‘Which’ questions related to an Ability
In this type of Which question, the child is asked if the object or the person on the flashcard has the ability to perform a task.
You can, for instance, ask the child:
- Which one can you peel, a remote control or a banana?
- Which one can see, a building or an ostrich?
How to teach Which questions?
To teach children how to answer Which questions, start with color printing the flashcards’ pdf file in the download section.
For durable materials, use a laminating machine to laminate the pdf file.
For easy storage and organization, you can use these envelopes or boxes with labels
Then, ask the question on the top of the flashcard while showing the images to the child. The child should answer by pointing or naming the right answer. Correct the student if the answer is wrong, or reinforce him when the answer is right.
