When questions are one of the most difficult WH questions to teach because, in order to understand them, your child has to fully understand the concept of time.
In this resource, children progressively learn to answer ‘When’ questions using flashcards with varying difficulty levels. These flashcards were designed with real pictures to ease the child into learning the temporal context in which events and activities take place.
How to teach WHEN questions in speech therapy?
To teach your child to answer when questions, start with printing and laminating the flashcards.
For easy storage and organization, you can use boxes or envelopes.
This resource has 22 cards (6 with picture prompts and 16 cards with 3 picture choices) to help teach your students to answer when questions:
- The level 1 cards have one picture prompt only in order to make it easy for the child to answer them. These questions are about simple events taking place at a specific time of the day or season.
- Level 2 flashcards are more complex since the child has to choose 1 picture as an answer among 3 choices.
Teaching similar questions like in this example “when do you sleep?” and “when do you go to bed?” asked in different formats (one or multiple choices’ flashcard) helps students understand concepts rather than memorize the answers.
In these flashcards (see the download section below), there are “when” questions that:
- “when” questions that focus on things that happen during a specific time in the day like morning, afternoon, evening, and night events or activities.
- “when” questions about things that happen in a specific season like Winter, Spring, Autumn, and Summer.
- a mixed collection of “when” questions that are more difficult and cover a variety of time frames like “after a shower” or “before the flight”. These questions require a good understanding of the concept of time.
