Free “WHAT” question Task Cards for ABA and Speech Therapy

This is the second article in our series on “WH” questions. Like “Who” questions, “What” questions are some of the easiest questions to teach children from age 2.

Why learn to answer “What” questions

Learning “What” questions is as important for language and communication development as “Who” questions. It mainly helps with conversations skills and enables the child to collect information on his environment.

Since “What” questions focus on objects, learning them helps the student /child enrich his vocabulary.

What are some examples of “What” questions?

In this activity, we include “what” questions and images of objects from children’s daily life to use in ABA or Speech therapy sessions. These questions were specifically chosen to pinpoint objects that students know very well:

  1. What do you eat with? (fork)
  2. What do you use to blow? (whistle)
  3. What do you use when you have a runny nose? (paper tissue)
  4. What vehicle takes sick people to the hospital? (ambulance)
  5. What do you use to tell time? (clock)
  6. What vehicle flies in the air? (airplane)
  7. What keeps you floating on water? (buoy)
  8. What do you draw with? (colored pencils)
  9. What takes pictures? (mobile phone)
  10. What washes the clothes? (washing machine)
  11. What cuts fruits? (knife)
  12. What do you use to play? (playhouse)
  13. What do you use to buy things? (money)
  14. What do you clean with? (mop)
  15. What do you sit on? (chair)
  16. What do you wear? (shirt)

How to teach your child “What” questions?

The flashcards (in the download section) were designed to help your child understand and answer “what” questions. This kind of question is always about an object: “what do you sleep on?”. All the answers to this question (bed, crib, sofa, hammock, etc.) are objects.

Each flashcard includes a question at the top and three image options for the answer at the bottom. In order to teach your student/child to answer “what” questions, put the flashcard on the desk and ask the question on the top. To answer, the student must either name or point toward the right image.

For durable materials, use a laminating machine to laminate the pdf file and storage envelopes to store the flashcards.
