If you are new to learning the features of objects you should start here to understand the process. It might seem complicated to see all of these files and activities, let me explain :
Why teach the Features of objects to children in ABA or Speech Therapy?
Understanding the connection between an object and its features is the foundation for mathematics, language, and science for children.
In addition to facilitating the learning of basic mathematical skills such as counting, operations, and fractions, this crucial early concept opens the door for language and communication skills such as associating words together to form sentences.
Its applications in science include the biological understanding of body parts, plants, and animal kingdoms.
How to teach the features of objects to my child?
The easiest way to teach your child the features of objects is to follow the ABA learning process as it’s easy and intuitive.
This diagram explains how to go through the process of learning features with your student:
Step 1: feature sorting activities
Sorting is the easiest activity to teach concepts such as features, categories, and functions.
It enables the child to quickly make connections between an object and its features and the other way around.
To make the sorting step even easier for the child and the educator, parent, behavior technician, or speech therapist, we divided it into two sections; 1st level sorting and second-level sorting:
The student here learns basic sorting by 2 features only. He is offered a sorting board (see the image below) and 4 objects to sort into 2 groups of features.
The features are different enough to make the sorting easy and to enable the child with autism or speech delay to quickly understand what’s expected of him.

Objects’ features: Sorting by feature for Beginners -ABA & speech therapy
This level is more complicated since the child has to sort multiple objects into 3 to 4 features at once. The child is then able to make more connections between objects and features.

Step 2: Features’ Flashcards
After practicing feature sorting activities using ABA and ABLLS-R, children are usually ready to go for the next which is answering feature questions.
In this phase, the student learns to answer questions on the objects that have a specific feature like for example “which object has a flame ?”.
To be able to do so, the student has to have a rich vocabulary and extensive knowledge about the objects and their features.
