Matching Non-Identical Pictures for ABA and Speech Therapy

Matching non-identical pictures is an important skill to learn in ABA and Speech therapy and the foundation for many other skills such as sorting categories, functions, and features.

Why learn to match non-identical pictures?

The goal of learning to differentiate similar, yet non-identical pictures, is to be able to find subtle differences and similarities.

Not paying attention to fine detail can affect children in general, and those with Autism or special needs, in many ways both academically (reading, maths, etc.) and socially.

How to teach children to differentiate non-identical pictures in ABA and Speech therapy?

We put together many activities to help your child learn matching non-identical items.

As always, we start with the easiest way to teach a new skill, which is sorting. The first activity is to sort similar yet non-identical images together. Then we teach the child to match non-identicals.

1. Sorting non-identical pictures

This resource is an excellent activity to start differentiating pictures of objects that are similar but not identical. This would typically look like the results for google images for an object: a collection of different images and illustrations for a specific object.

What’s included:

A total of 32 task cards to learn sorting non-identical pictures designed with 4 levels of difficulty. From one level to the other, the number of items to sort and categories to sort from increases:

In this fun activity, young children or children with Autism and other learning disabilities, learn to match pictures that belong to the same object together. Here, children learn to match pictures of cats together, dogs together and balls together. They learn that the same object can be represented in different ways and they are trained to identify similar pictures.
